Learning Formally or Informally...? Why not Both!

Throughout the last decade there have been numerous debates (see from the dates in the bibliography) and discussions on the future of learning.

The development of social technology has changed the way we think about the world and is also shaking up the way we approach learning. I am still dumbstruck to learn, however, that rarely have businesses really integrated all of these recent changes into their operations. How would you react if your R&D invested 80% of its budget into developing products or services that only reached a tiny part of the market?

Social Learning fills the empty barrels of Enterprise 2.0.

Without going all the way back to the theories of Vygotsky or Albert Bandura, the simplest way to explain social learning is perhaps to look at the work of Richard J. Legers (Harvard Graduate School of Education), who has shown that one of the most important factors for success...

The future of the training department in the Collaborative Enterprise

The latter 20th Century was the golden era of the training department. Before the 20th Century, training per se did not exist outside the special needs of the church and the military. Now the training department may be at the end of its life cycle. Join us for a brief look back at the pre-training world and some thoughts about what may lay ahead...

The Learning Age

"This isn't the Information Age, it's the Learning Age; and the quicker people get their heads around that, the better"    Professeur Stephen Heppell

Heppel's remarks appear in this short video on the future of learning which asks the key question "What do we want to do" (with all of this networked information technology)...

About Harold JARCHE

Harold%20jarche%20 %20entreprise%20collaborative%20 %20ecollab%20administrator Thumb

Harold Jarche passionately believes in the re-integration of work and learning. People have connected with Harold over the past decade, through his blog and consulting practices, for innovative ideas on business, technology, social networks and learning. He also distills heady topics like complexity theory into practical advice. Harold has saved clients time and money by focusing on business objectives and conducting cause analyses, instead of prescribing training as a solution looking for a problem.

A graduate of the Royal Military College, Harold served over 20 years in the Canadian Army in leadership and training roles. Harold has held senior positions at the Centre for Learning Technologies and e-Com Inc.

His preferred workplace is on his bike, where he gets his best ideas.

The learning organization: an often described, but seldom observed phenomenon

W. Edwards Deming understood that systemic factors account for more organizational problems, and therefore more potential for change, than any individual’s performance. The role of managers should be to manage the system, not the individual functions. The real barrier to systemic change, such as becoming a learning organization, is command & control management. This is why the third principle for net workshared power, is a major stumbling block to becoming a learning organization. Narration of work and transparency are easy, compared to sharing power. But learning is what organizations need to do well in order to survive and thrive...

Social learning: the freedom to act and cooperate with others

“Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy“ - Article #7 of The Cluetrain Manifesto, 1999.

The Net, especially working and learning in networks, subverts many of the hierarchies we have developed over hundreds of years. Formal education is one example, as shown in this excellent article by Cathy Davidson...

Resetting learning and work

A large portion of the workforce face significant barriers to being autonomous learners on the job. From early on we are told to look to authority and direction in learning and work. The idea that there is a right answer, or an expert with the right answer, begins in our schools. John Taylor Gatto describes this in the seven-lesson schoolteacher...

Innovation through network learning

Formalized informal learning: a blend we don’t need

Telling people that we can “formalize informal learning” is a not so subtle way of saying, “it’s OK, you don’t have to make any fundamental changes to the way you’ve been been doing training & development for the past half century”.

I asked the question in February’s eCollab Blog Carnival, with tongue very close to my cheek, because I knew it would stimulate discussion on the role of informal learning in workplace performance...

Informal Learning: mission critical

When Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan return from patrol, they spend time relaxing together in small, tightly-knit groups and tell stories about the mission. There is no form to these sessions, just soldiers hanging out with each other.

The conversations include jokes and insults, but the act of sharing helps to make the group more cohesive. Military leaders see this time as essential, and no one interferes with these small groups...

An interview with Jay Cross, the author of Informal Learning

Jay Cross, Chief Scientist at the Internet Time Group, is the author of Informal Learning: Rediscovering the natural pathways that inspire innovation and performance, which was published in 2006.

I asked Jay why he wrote the book and he told me that little had been published on informal learning in the workplace in spite of the fact that's how most learning happens...

The Evolving Social Organization

LMS is no longer the centre of the universe

OK, so here’s the deal – if learning is work and work is learning, why is organizational learning controlled by a learning management systems (LMS) that isn’t connected to the work being done in the enterprise? Learning is no longer what you do before you go to work, never having to learn anything else in order to do your job. In the 21st century networked economy, learning and working are becoming one...

Social learning is real

Once again, I’m learning from my colleagues, as yesterday I realized how important self-direction is in enabling social learning. Social CRM and business transformation

Forget all this talk about “Social Business”, “Social Enterprise”, “Social Organization”, “Social XYZ” – your business already is “Social” because by its very nature it consists of people interacting with each to get work done. Collaboration is already happening within your ecosystem – between employees, different departments, suppliers, channels, buyers, customers without the need to add the “Social” prefix. Adding the word by itself does bring attention to the idea that we need to change, but it is overly used (and has been hijacked) by certain vendors to mean the toolset rather than the mindset and thus risks diluting the message.

The Future of the Training Department

Social Learning seems to me to be an innovative approach to continuous learning (I am an eternal student of life myself). From what I understand, the idea is to use the web 2.0 to enable free-flow collaborative learning that builds upon the insights of others and leads to new ones. This is advocated in opposition to the more traditional, structured instructor-led top-down approach to learning (tell me if I’m wrong?...

Social Learning and Customers Engagement

One of the approaches to improving Customer Engagement and Experiences I’d like to explore is the potential to include customers, partners and suppliers in the Social Learning process. One of the drawbacks of an customer ideation platform/community is that more than 99% of the ideas are never looked at or implemented because they do not take into account the business context and constraints...

Examples of Facilitating Collaborative Work and Learning

The nature of my work has changed significantly over the past few years. Some of the change is due to advances in technology while others are due to changes in workforce expectations and work habits. For me this has meant that formal training is becoming a more specialized type of learning experience. And, the learning experiences I design and facilitate have changed, too, with many of them fitting into one of the three core processes Harold Jarche lists in his post about the future of the training department...

From Social Media to Social Business: The social learning as missing link

I am often puzzled by the way organizations and agencies tackle social media, as if conversational marketing and Enterprise 2.0 were living in separate worlds, addressing totally different issues, pursuing irreconcilable goals. Do they?

Knowledge: Cheshire or Schrödinger’s cat ?

Web 2.0 technologies allow us to formalize the informal, allowing us to tag, comment, recommend documents or contributions, adding them an interactive, tangible contextual layer. At the opposite, patents are among the most formal pieces of knowledge. But the use of properly designed SNA tools unveils their hidden informal nature.

By uncovering citations, comments, and referencing and patterns of influence among clusters of linked patents and examinations, network analysis highlights intangible relationships. By changing our view on knowledge, we are able to consider it as formal or as informal, switching from an artifact to another...

Knowledge, From Productivity Source to Critical Component

Productivity: The amount of output per unit of input (laborequipment, and capital).

Enterprise has for long understood, and applied, that training and education are an important part of its hunt for competitive advantages.  At operational level, first, training allows for better adequacy between employees, their role, and the hierarchy- and process-based ‘mechanics’ of Enterprise. At competitive level, then, acquisition of new knowledg
